Chemotherapy is primarily known as a treatment for cancer. Although the cytostatics used are intended to attack the tumors as specifically as possible, the entire organism is usually affected and there are serious undesirable side effects, which are accepted in the absence of alternative treatments for cancer. In most cases, chemotherapy is only given after surgery or radiation treatment of the tumors. Both the chances of recovery and the occurrence of side effects are heavily dependent on the selection of active ingredients. In addition to its use in cancer, chemotherapy with special active ingredients (e.g. antivirals, antibiotics, anthelmintics) is also used to treat various infectious diseases. (fp)
