Artichokes are not only valued as food, but are also known as a medicinal plant. They can be used, for example, for complaints in the digestive tract, high cholesterol, for detoxification of the liver and the prevention of hardening of the arteries. The polyphenols, flavonoids and quinic acid derivatives in particular are held responsible for the positive health effects of the flowering vegetables. If the biliary tract is blocked, artichokes should be avoided as the problem of gall stasis (cholestasis) can otherwise be exacerbated dramatically. (fp)
